Forests are a source of pride for people in the Monashee. They are home to a greater diversity of plants and animals and they support hundreds of working families, our businesses and communities. In British Columbia, every year, nearly 2,000 forest fires put our forests at risk.
Humans and forests provide us with our primary economic and lifestyle opportunities but humans have also introduced many disturbances to our region that alter the natural pattern of vegetation.
These practices include agricultural activities, livestock grazing, the development of transportation corridors, timber harvesting, mining, urbanization and tourism. Many non-native plants have also been introduced some intentionally, other accidentally- and some of these are so aggressive that they are replacing some of our native species.
In the Monashee, individuals and community organizations work hard at building stewardship programs that provides a sustainable interaction between human activity and nature. Please do your part to protect our forests in the Monashee.
