GOLFING
Golfing in the Monashee is a breathtaking experience as the natural landscape meanders around our courses. Unspoiled by cookie-cutter, strip-mall developments, we offer an eclectic mix of unique courses filled with the types of towering trees, mountain view and river glimpses that most tried-and-true golf destination visitors will never see. All this for greens fees that make you feel like you flew back into the 50's.
It's the wilderness that makes golfing different here. From courses next to the Arrow Lakes, to a driving range like Whitewood in Cherryville. The Monashee has the laid back comfort that only country living can match.
RIVER RIDGE GOLF COURSE
Located on Highway 6 in Cherryville, along the banks of the Shuswap River. Golfers of all skill levels will find it a challenging course. The course has BCGA and ICGA ratings, and a Slope rating for both men and women. You can also stop in for some fine dining at the club house restaurant.
THE LUMBY GOLF COURSE
Boasting a view that few can match. The nine-hole course opened in 1961, and the first year saw sheep mowing the fairways. The course operates without irrigation, with their sand greens being oiled. The pace is leisurely, and there is rarely a wait for tee times.
THE COLDSTREAM GOLF COURSE
Located on the corner of Hwy 6 and Dure Meadow Road west of Lumby, Coldstream Golf Course provides a casual, unhurried golf experience and weekday afternoon specials. The Par 4, nine-hole course caters to all levels of skill, offering 3 tee choices from beginner to pro and boasts the longest Par 5 in the valley at 600 yards. Sprawning salmon in Duteau Creek, eagles flying over scenic surroundings, and abundant species of birds and wildlife make your game a natural experience.
WHITEWOOD DRIVING RANGE
Located in Cherryville this driving range is prefect to perfect your swing. Come out for a nicely leisurely sunday or through out the week and you'll be a pro on the golfcourse in no time.
HANG GLIDING & PARAGLIDING
It's as close as you can get to having wings and Lumby is the world center for this amazing adventure experience.
Hang gliding enthusiasts will appreciate the bird's eye view they will get flying through the sky over Lumby. A favorite with both local and visiting pilots, the Cooper's Launch is a public launch site found up Trinity Valley via Defies Creek. Saddle Mountain is also a great private launch, but is restricted to those accompanied by a local pilot. King Edward and Vernon Mountain both provide a gentle grassy slope for take-off and have no shortage of large fields for landing.
The Lumby Valley and area is known all over the world as the Hang Gliding and Paragliding competition capital of Canada for its friendly people and winds, semi arid climate, numerous safe launches and of course the Great Thermal Lift!
The Lumby Air Force started in 1975 when they hosted the first Hang Gliding competition during Lumby Days in that year. Since then many National, Provincial and Regional competitions have been successfully hosted in Lumby. Lumby has the best areas for racing around a course rather than just racing down wind. This requires an extra level of pilot proficiency to win this type of event.

SNOWMOBILING
From the backside of Silver Star let us show you real mountains with the best powder in all of Canada!
With full blaze on over an open plateau or a technical ride through the forest, sledders have a great time making tracks in the Okanagan's premiere destination for snowmobiling. Park Mountain, the Aberdeen, Graystokes and the Keefer Lake area are a few of the snowmobiling destinations in the area.
Area accommodators have places to park your sled trailer and yourself so that you can turn a day of sledding into three days of winter escape!
There's never a shortage of snow in the mountains. Weather it's riding with an established club, cutting your own trails, or booking a snowmobile tour, there's plenty of backcountry to serve everyone's needs. The Lumby/Mabel Lake Snowmobile Association provides groomed trails and maps for the Park Mountain Range, the Pinnacles, Monashee Mountains, and Silver Star.
For more information on area snowmobiling visit the Lumby Visitor Information Centre.
SKIING & SNOWSHOEING
Ride a snowcat to savor incredible mountain scenery in powder heaven. The Monashee has a rich history for backcountry skiing, Monashee Powder and SOL Mountain Adventures both operate backcounty winter lodges high up in the Monashee Mountains.
For a quiet weekend or daytrip into snow, Creighton Valley and the Monashee Foothills can offer many opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Stay in one of our B&B's or a Cozy Cabin after a day of strides around frozen lakes and crystal forests. The Monashee offers an ideal winter escape on the edge of the Okanagan.

WILDLIFE VIEWING
Due to diverse ecosystems the Monashee offers great variety of wildlife viewing. The transition from Okanagan grassland and Ponderosa Pine forests to Douglas Fir and Interior Rainforests as well as alpine, provides a range habitat which is home to many different kinds of birds mammals reptiles, and amphibians not to mention life in our lakes and streams.
Remember, this area is sparsely populated and the farms and villages you see along the travel routes are often bordered by wilderness, so be prepared for risk and adventure, Much of the Monashee is Grizzly Bear country and seeing a Black Bear is quite common. Large populations of whitetail deer inhabit the valley bottoms and the lower altitude logging cutbacks. The mixed forests bordering the numerous hayfields and pastures are particularly productive white-tailed deer habitat, so viewing deer from the road is quite common, so drive carefully and stop when you see deer ready to cross the road.
Mule deer can be found at higher altitudes, which can be accessed, by hundreds of kilometers of logging roads and trails.
BIRD WATCHING
The Monashee is a paradise for bird-watchers. During the summer months Swainson's Thrush can be seen as well as Western Flycatchers, Osprey and Bald Eagles. There are excellent viewing areas all along the Shuswap River and along our various lakes.
The canoe is the choice craft many local birdwatchers and photographers use to view waterfowl and song birds. Rawlings Lake is a popular nesting area for Ruddy Ducks, Black Terns and Sandhill Cranes. Many Thrushes and Dippers can be seen on the roadside creeks. Loons can be spotted on beautiful Echo Lake.
At Sugar Lake watch for Barred Owls and along Kate Creek Road, Bobolink and Mountain Bluebirds can be seen. In the sub-alpine, including Monashee Provincial Park and Park Mountain, Ptarmigan can be spotted.
HUNTING & FISHING
With all the lakes in the North Okanagan and Monashee, we are a destination for freshwater sport fishing. Our scenic lakes and great weather add to the adventure of hooking on to the big one! Rainbow, Kokanee, and Lake trout are found in good numbers throughout the region, and there are lodges and tour operators waiting to make your fishing dreams come true. We even have a Salmon fishing season in the fall.
Pristine lakes like Echo, Mabel, Keefer, and Sugar Lake are easy to get to, then for the dedicated fly fisherman we have a number of smaller lakes you can hike into, or go off-road. The Shuswap River is another prime fishing location, though you should be careful of fast currents in some locations.
The Monashee offers a great variety of hunting to both rifle hunters and bow hunters. Hunting seasons are provided for mule deer, whitetail deer, black bear, cougar, grouse, pheasants, ducks and geese.
The mixed forests bordering the numerous hayfields and pastures are particularly productive to the still hunter and stand hunter. Several whitetail deer bucks from this area have placed high in the B.C. Trophy Record Book.
Mule deer hunting usually requires the hunter to head to higher altitudes and once the snow comes to the high country, mule deer hunting is great. Both spring and fall hunting seasons are provided for black bear and cougar hunting over snow with Scent dogs is a popular specialized hunt in the winter. Because of their secretive nature, very few cougars are seen or taken without dogs.
Grouse hunting is popular in the fall in areas of forest which have been disturbed by logging. Recent clear cuts provide the perfect habitat for the grouse and allow both hunter and dog to work in open areas. There is limited pheasant, goose and duck hunting available because these species congregate on local farmland, so hunting is only possible but with the owner's permission.
